How this hiking calorie calculator works
The calculation separates the cost of covering horizontal distance from the extra cost of climbing and descending. Body weight and backpack weight are combined because both must move along the trail.
Add body and pack weight
A heavier hiker or backpack generally requires more energy over the same route. Pack weight stays visible so you can compare a light day hike with an overnight load.
Estimate horizontal travel
Distance provides the base route cost. Duration is used to show hourly burn and to flag unusually long sessions, but speed alone does not erase the work of moving the full route.
Add ascent and descent
Climbing has a larger energy cost than level travel, while descending still requires muscular work. Enter cumulative gain and loss for a more useful estimate than start-to-finish elevation difference.

Use cumulative elevation
A loop that starts and ends at the same altitude can still contain substantial climbing. Export total ascent and descent from a trustworthy route profile when possible.
Surface and weather still matter
Mud, snow, loose rock, altitude, heat, cold, and strong wind can change effort without changing the route statistics entered here.
Do not automatically eat back every calorie
For weight management, compare the estimate with maintenance calories, hunger, recovery, and several weeks of body-weight trend rather than one hike or one wearable reading.
